Dr. Wu was born in Hong Kong. Growing up he traveled extensively and lived with his family in Europe, Asia and Central America. He came to the United States as a senior at Ithaca High School in New York and went on to graduate magna cum laude with honors in Biophysics from Brown University in 1977. He earned his medical degree in 1981 from the University of Connecticut Medical School.

Following medical school he did his internship in Surgery at Boston City Hospital and Boston University Medical Center. He completed his Neurosurgery Residency training under the mentorship of Drs. William Shucart and R. Michael Scott at Tufts Medical Center in 1987. After residency he did a neuroscience research fellowship at Tufts Medical School supported by the Research Foundation of the American Association of Neurological Surgeons and the American Brain Tumor Association. After his research fellowship he focused his neurosurgical practice and research in Neuro-oncology.

Dr. Wu started his practice at Tufts Medical Center with Dr. Shucart. He went on to become Chief of Neurosurgery at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center from 1997 to 2005 and Associate Professor of Surgery at Harvard Medical School in 2000. In 2005 he returned to Tufts Medical Center to be the Associate Chairman of the Department of Neurosurgery, Chief of Neurosurgical Oncology and Program Director of the Tufts Neurosurgery Residency Training Program. He became Professor of Neurosurgery at Tufts University School of Medicine in 2006. He co-directs the Gamma Knife Center at Tufts Medical Center. For over two decades, Dr. Wu has worked closely with basic scientists to further the understanding of the mechanisms of brain tumor tumorigenesis, progression and invasion. Through novel clinical protocol studies he has also worked collaboratively with his clinical colleagues from different disciplines to develop better treatments for brain tumor patients.

Dr. Wu is married to Yu-Wen Wu a visual artist and has two grown children Kai and Kyle.
