Vikram Prabhu was born December 20th 1967 in Bangalore, India. He attended St. Joseph’s College and served as a naval cadet in the National Cadet Corps. He graduated medical school from St. John’s in 1991 and immigrated to the United States in 1992. His training included a surgical internship at the University of Nebraska with Dr. Lyal Leibrock followed by a residency in Neurosurgery under Drs. Howard Kaufman and Julian Bailes. He also earned a Master’s degree in Neurosciences at the University of Nebraska. After residency, he joined a fellowship in Neurosurgical Oncology at Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center with Drs. Philip Gutin and Mark Bilsky. He started his practice at the University of Nebraska under Dr. Leibrock and served as Interim Chair of the section from 2003-04. In 2004, he moved to Loyola University under Dr. Thomas Origitano and was appointed Medical Director. In 2006, he was inducted into the American College of Surgeons as a fellow and in 2009, into the AOA. He is the AOA Councillor for the Epsilon Chapter at the Stritch School of Medicine. He served as the residency program director at Loyola from 2008-16 and as Interim Chairman of the Department of Neurosurgery at Loyola from 2011-12. Vikram was promoted to the rank of Professor in 2013 and currently serves as the Quality Medical Director for the Department of Neurosurgery.
Vikram’s practice is focused on cranial base surgery, meningiomas, gliomas, pituitary, and metastatic tumors. He is a member of the peripheral nerve surgery center at Loyola. His research interest is in the genetics and cell cycle modulators of brain tumors. He served on the editorial board of The Journal of Stroke and Cerebrovascular Diseases, Journal of Neurological Surgery-Skull Base, AANS Neurosurgeon, Contemporary Neurosurgery, Journal of Neurosurgery Imaging and Techniques, and Neuroscience Discovery and actively participates in the editorial process of several other journals.
Vikram has served organizational Neurosurgery in various capacities: the CNS fellowship and SANS committees, the AANS Public Relations Committee, the NASBS membership and credentials committee, and the board of the Interurban neurosurgical society. He is Vice-President of the Illinois State Neurosurgical Society and served on the NASBS Board of Directors from 2014-17. He is a member of the Society of Neurological Surgeons Nominating committee and participates in the annual resident education course. He has served on the faculty council of Loyola University Chicago and the Executive board of the Cardinal Bernadin Cancer Center.
On a personal note, Vikram is married to Caroline and lives in Oak Brook, Illinois with their children David, Michael, John, Meg, and Kate. They are actively involved in their community. Vikram enjoys working out, playing tennis, football, and baseball with his sons, or going for a walk with his daughters and the family dog, Tobey. He likes art, history, and geography. He is very dedicated to the Navy, and enjoys studying naval ships, aircraft carriers, and fighter jets and reliving the exploits of the Apollo space program.
